The MED EN24T steel flywheel is lighter and stronger than the EN8 variety, making it an ideal upgrade for fast road and competition Minis. The clutch face has been specially machined to accept either an MED Bonded Clutch, MED Turbo Clutch or our narrow-section Racing Paddle Clutch. It can be supplied with either pre-engaged or inertia ring gear, which is TIG welded in six positions after fitting. Complete with three spacers for the drive straps.
We'd also recommend purchasing an MED EN24T Steel Backplate, or ideally as a balanced clutch and flywheel kit.
The MED EN24T backplate is CNC machined from nitrided steel billet, with profiled rear pockets for extra weight reduction and more efficient cooling.
It weighs just 0.87kg, a 34% saving over the MED Ultra Light Steel Back Plate, and an enormous weight saving over the standard item.
These are popular with historic Mini racers where the X-Lite Aluminium Back Plate is not allowed.

Upgrading to an MED steel flywheel not only saves weight, but also gives a more durable surface face on which to grip the clutch plate. The lighter the flywheel, the faster the engine will be able to increase/decrease RPM, making it more free-revving and responsive to throttle input. The lightest possible clutch and flywheel setup is ideal for a competition car, whereas a road car will benefit from more flywheel mass to retain drivability in traffic.
The mid-range MED EN24T Ultra Light is therefore an excellent choice for both high peformance road cars and competition usage.
This flywheel will suit all transverse A-Series engines (Mini/Metro) with a pre-Verto clutch setup. It is possible to convert from Verto to pre-Verto by purchasing the MED Heavy Duty Clutch Operating Kit. Please note - this will not suit fuel-injected Rover Minis. Pre-engaged or inertia?
This relates to the starter motor installed on your Mini. Inertia is the original style that uses a separate solenoid unit on the inner wing, whereas pre-engaged has an in-built solenoid. If you have one of our High Torque or Slimline starter motors, simply choose the correct flywheel to suit.
For reference, pre-engaged flywheels have 129 teeth on the ring gear, inertia types have 107 teeth.
The later Verto system introduced in the mid-1980s makes a good alternative for a performance road Mini. The steel flywheel itself is lighter than its pre-Verto equivalent, however the Heavy Duty Clutch Cover that accompanies it makes the complete assembly heavier. The Verto setup gives an easier clutch pedal, so overall it's a good alternative for road Minis.
For full competition usage we would recommend the MED X-Lite Flywheel, which features larger cut-outs and an integral ring gear for the starter motor. This is also machined from EN24T but is far lighter.
