The MED Stage 2 Ultra Light Assembly includes an EN8 steel flywheel, backplate and MED bonded solid clutch plate. It's the ideal setup for high performance road and trackday cars with a pre-Verto system. 

The package is expertly assembled and dynamically balanced to order. Simply remove the diaphragm washer and spring clip before installation and there is no need to disassemble the clutch/flywheel. Don't forget to refit the washer and clip after installation.  

The package includes:

  • MED EN8 Ultra Light steel flywheel.
  • MED EN8 Ultra Light steel back plate.
  • MED bonded solid clutch plate.
  • Competition orange clutch cover.
  • Six high quality drive straps.
  • Six EN16T steel drive bolts.
  • Full assembly and dynamic balance.

Flywheels are available with either a pre-engaged or inertia-type starter motor ring gear. 

The St3 Ultra Light package upgrades the flywheel to a stronger and lighter EN24T steel variety.

Recommended usage

Upgrading to an MED steel flywheel not only saves weight, but also gives a more durable surface face on which to grip the clutch plate. The lighter the flywheel, the faster the engine will be able to increase/decrease RPM, making it more free-revving and responsive to throttle input. The lightest possible clutch and flywheel setup is ideal for a competition car, whereas a road car will benefit from more flywheel mass to retain drivability in traffic. 

The entry-level MED EN8 Ultra Light is therefore an excellent choice for peformance road cars - lighter than standard yet still usable on a daily driver. It could also be used for light competition. 

This flywheel will suit all transverse A-Series engines (Mini/Metro) with a pre-Verto clutch setup. It is possible to convert from Verto to pre-Verto by purchasing the MED Heavy Duty Clutch Operating Kit. Please note - this will not suit fuel-injected Rover Minis. Pre-engaged or inertia?

This relates to the starter motor installed on your Mini. Inertia is the original style that uses a separate solenoid unit on the inner wing, whereas pre-engaged has an in-built solenoid. If you have one of our High Torque or Slimline starter motors, simply choose the correct flywheel to suit.

For reference, pre-engaged flywheels have 129 teeth on the ring gear, inertia types have 107 teeth.

Alternative options

The later Verto system introduced in the mid-1980s makes a good alternative for a performance road Mini. The steel flywheel itself is lighter than its pre-Verto equivalent, however the Heavy Duty Clutch Cover that accompanies it makes the complete assembly heavier. The Verto setup gives an easier clutch pedal, so overall it's a good alternative for road Minis.  

Moving up in the range from our pre-Verto Ultra Light Steel flywheel, we offer an EN24T Ultralite Steel Flywheel. EN24T offers greater tensile strength than our EN8 flywheel to reduce the chance of the flywheel fretting on the crankshaft in competition engines. The additional strength of EN24T also allows for extra weight saving, as we can safely machine more material away. 

Saving yet more weight is the MED X-Lite Flywheel, which features larger cut-outs and an integral ring gear for the starter motor.
