Description

The MED inline flywheel is CNC machined from billet EN8 steel to suit 1275 Sprite/Midget applications, saving weight and increasing durability. This flywheel is suitable for trackday and full competition usage, weighing just 3.9kg, but it can also be used very effectively on performance road cars.

While reducing overall weight, the kit upgrades the standard 6.5-inch clutch plate to a 7.5-inch competition-grade plate, to hold considerably more torque.

It is supplied as a fully-balanced kit, ready to fit.

Kit contents:

  • MED 7.5-inch Ultra Light steel flywheel

  • Organic bonded clutch plate

  • MED heavy-duty clutch cover

  • Six cover bolts

  • Roller release bearing kit

Light modification for clearance may be needed within the bell housing when fitting this clutch cover.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the performance advantage of using a lightweight flywheel?

Arrow

Weight loss helps acceleration, and reducing weight from the rotating assembly of the engine has an even greater effect here than the weight loss alone. Installing a lightweight flywheel will considerably improve the car's acceleration compared to the standard heavy setup, and is a must for any performance-oriented A-Series engine.

Can I lighten the standard flywheel instead?

Arrow

You can, but the MED flywheel is CNC machined from EN8 steel, so we can safely make these far lighter than the standard cast iron flywheel. Only very mild lightening of the standard flywheel is recommended, as there is a real risk of catastrophic failure. This design also upgrades the clutch cover and plate to handle more torque, while the EN8 steel gives better durability on the friction face.

Does a lightweight flywheel increase engine power?

Arrow

Lightening the flywheel makes no difference to the power output of the A-Series engine, but the lighter overall rotating assembly will sap less energy under acceleration. Therefore, the available power can be used more efficiently, making the car faster off the line. This is especially useful in a lightweight classic car with more modest power outputs.

Which cars does this fit specifically?

Arrow

Inline-engined 1275cc A-Series classic cars, predominantly MG Midget and Austin Healey Sprite, but it's also popular for Morris Minors, classic Lotus and single seater race cars with the Sprite running gear. These do not suit the classic Mini, or small-bore inline engines such as 1048/1098cc.

I have a Ford Type 9 gearbox in my Sprite - will this work?

Arrow

The clutch plate spline is designed to fit the original BMC gearbox, however we try to have a small stock of Ford-splined clutch plates as an alternative. If you have this specific gearbox install, please contact us and we can confirm current availability.

Will this suit a 1275 Morris Marina crankshaft?

Arrow

As supplied, no, but a competent machine shop will be able to adapt the flywheel to suit. The Marina crankshaft has a larger diameter flywheel mounting face, so you will need to enlarge the centre bore of the flywheel to suit. It is approximately 0.040" larger in diameter.

What spec is the clutch plate?

Arrow

This uses a high-quality resin bonded mixture of heavy-duty metal compounds. Compared to a standard plate, this improves longevity, reduces judder, gives a higher coefficient of friction and also copes better with higher burst speeds.

Which starter motor do I need to use?

Arrow

Either the standard original type, or one of our high-torque upgrades, part number MED-5220-HTII. Alternatively, for those on a weight-saving mission, we also have the micro starter motor - part number MED-5255-MSI.

What modifications are required to fit this?

Arrow

Depending on the transmission housing, some light machining may be required internally for clutch cover clearance. The kit includes a roller bearing setup in place of the standard carbon release bearing. There are two options on securing clips for the clutch arm, and we include instructions on how to install these.

Do I need anything else to fit the flywheel?

Arrow

We would recommend a set of ARP flywheel bolts, part number MED-3502-QB, to secure the flywheel to the crankshaft.
