Description

Our bespoke breather system complete with under wing catch tank, fixtures, fittings and a special vintage wrap effect silicone hose. The kit is designed for competition Minis, with the two-litre catch tank mounted under the right inner wing.

High performance A-Series engines tend to run higher crankcase pressure and need larger breathers to avoid damage to oil seals and gaskets. This kit allows the engine to breath more effectively, catching any oily residue in the process. Most race circuits frown upon open breathers; in many cases an oil catch tank is mandatory.

The MED kit allows you to connect the transfer housing breather outlet to the rocker cover, then the rocker cover to the catch tank via a 25mm hose.

Choose from a Polished Aluminium Rocker Cover or a crackle black powder-coated steel type. Both are supplied with a chrome filler cap.

Kit contents:

  • Choice of rocker cover - painted steel or polished aluminium.

  • Stainless steel rocker cover fittings.

  • Rocker cover gasket.

  • Vintage wrap effect silicone hose, to be trimmed to the correct lengths.

  • Hose clips to suit.

  • 90-degree aluminium joiner and transfer case fitting.

  • Aluminium two-litre under-wing catch tank.

  • 25mm breather filter.

Please note, there may be some residue polish on the polished alloy covers, left over from the buffing process. Simply buff clean with a microfibre cloth once in situ.

Use metal polish to maintain the finish.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will this rocker cover fit with roller rockers?

Arrow

Yes, we mill the inside rear of the alloy rocker cover to allow clearance for MED roller rockers, and the steel version works too. Other brands should also fit, but we have only tried our own. If the rockers are situated quite far back on the head in relation to the rocker cover, loosely install the fixings and there is some adjustment available on the rubbers, so push back on the cover and nip up the fixings.

Where does the catch tank fit?

Arrow

It fits under the drivers' side (on right-hand-drive Minis) wing, high up on the inner wing/flitch panel area. The tank is shaped to neatly follow the profile of this panel. If you have a later Mini with interior air vent and tube in this area, you will need to remove this to install the tank.

How do I empty the tank?

Arrow

There's a threaded plug/screw in the bottom of the tank, which can be accessed easily in situ. A crankcase breather is included in the kit, to be fitted to the top outlet on the tank.

Will the rocker cover fit all A-Series engines?

Arrow

Yes, apart from those with aftermarket twin-cam heads, or with additional parts in the way of the breather tubes, such as supercharger installations or large brake servos.

Why would I need a breather kit like this?

Arrow

We've put together a blog post all about classic Mini engine breather systems at www.med-engineering.co.uk/blogs/news/classic-mini-a-series-engine-breathers-the-lowdown

Do you have any other fitment tips?

Arrow

When trimming the hose to length, fit one of the supplied hose clips where you plan to cut, then run a brand new Stanley knife blade around the clip as a guide. This will make a very neat trim. Before installing the rocker cover, stick the cork gasket in place with contact adhesive, for easy installation. To fit the catch tank you will need to remove the front wheel and lift the car, mark and drill the panel, and install with your choice of fixings. We would recommend stainless steel threaded inserts and screws.

How do I pass the breather hose through to the catch tank?

Arrow

If you have a race Mini without inner wings, it's easy. On a more standard car, you will need to drill a suitable access hole in the inner wing to pass the hose through to the catch tank.
