Description

The MED MPi Mini flywheel is CNC machined from EN8 steel billet and weighs just 4.25kg, for a noticeable improvement to acceleration. This makes an excellent upgrade over the standard flywheel, for fast road or light competition.

The standard Rover flywheel features a separate reluctor ring, which can move and affect the ignition timing. Here the teeth are machined directly into the flywheel, to very close tolerances, to maintain accurate ignition timing.

These must be used in conjunction with our Verto Standard Clutch Cover or Verto Heavy Duty Clutch Cover for correct reluctor positioning.

If you require a complete balanced assembly with the clutch plate, competition clutch cover and centre boss, see the MED MPi Ultra Light St1 or MED MPi Ultra Light St2.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which cars does this fit?

Arrow

This flywheel kit suits classic Rover Minis with the multi-point fuel injection system, as fitted from 1996-2000. It would also fit carburettor-fed Minis with the Verto-style clutch, although we keep a specific flywheel for this, part number MED-4400-VUL.

What is the performance advantage of this flywheel?

Arrow

Upgrading to an MED steel flywheel not only saves weight, but also gives a more durable surface face on which to grip the clutch plate. The lighter the flywheel, the faster the engine will be able to increase/decrease RPM, making it more free-revving and responsive to throttle input. In addition, the CNC-machined reluctor ring teeth will not move, which can happen on the standard flywheel, affecting the overall performance.

Is it pre-balanced?

Arrow

No, as the flywheel will need to be bolted to a Verto-style clutch cover and centre boss, then balanced as an assembly. It's not possible to balance the flywheel as a standalone item. If you would like this to be balanced, we offer complete kits that are ready to bolt on, complete with new cover and friction plate.

Which diameter clutch plate is this designed for?

Arrow

Either 180mm or 190mm diameter plates will work. Our range of performance plates are all 180mm in diameter.

Will this bolt on to a standard clutch cover?

Arrow

Yes, either a standard clutch cover, or preferably one of our upgraded versions.

Which starter motor do I need to use?

Arrow

This flywheel has 129 teeth on the ring gear and is designed for pre-engaged Mini starter motors only, as standard. Be careful with budget-grade replacement starter motors, as flex in the starter motor bendix can damage the ring gear teeth. We would recommend using the MED-5240-MP Micro starter motor if you're looking for an upgrade.

What's the difference between SPi and MPi Mini flywheels?

Arrow

SPi Minis have two gaps in the reluctor ring, whereas MPi have four. Otherwise these flywheels are identical.

Will this suit my Japanese-market Mini?

Arrow

Yes, if the Mini has an MPi engine block, identifiable by the lack of a traditional distributor. If your JDM Mini has a distributor and cylindrical coil, rather than wasted spark coil pack, look instead at the SPi Mini flywheel, part number MED-4500-SPU.
