Where does this lock tab fit?

This is to retain the input gear nut on the end of the first motion shaft of the classic Mini gearbox. The first motion shaft is also known as fourth gear.

What's the original Rover part number?

These were listed as DAM4000.

Do I always need a new one?

Yes, we would recommend you install a new one each time the input gear is changed, or during a gearbox rebuild. You will only need one of these per gearbox. See MED-3823-LT for the lock tab on the other side of the gearbox, which holds the pinion nut in place.
