Frequently Asked Questions
Which classic Mini gearbox is this rebuild kit suitable for?
We offer two different kits, to suit remote 4-synchro gearboxes and the later A+ rod change. 4-synchro remote gearboxes can be identified by the casing number '22G1128'. Later A+ rod change gearboxes can be identified as 'DAM4818', 'DAM2886' and 'DAM5626.' If you're still unsure, please email us and we can help further. There is some cross-over between 1970s rod change gearboxes.
I have an early rod change gearbox - will this rebuild kit be suitable?
If you have a '22G1832' gearbox, these had the earlier mainshaft, so the needle roller bearings are a different design, and also for the layshaft. We can still help with many parts for these, so please email us and we'll be able to offer more advice. There was some degree of overlap between gearbox designs by the factory in the 1970s.
Does this include everything I need for the rebuild?
Yes, the only exception being the idler gear bearings, as many of our customers choose to run a set of MED roller bearing drop gears, making these redundant. We can supply the standard idler gear bearings separately if required.
Can I run a 998 Mini gearbox on a 1275 engine?
Yes, these are identical and can be swapped from one to the other. The only difference came with the Metro Turbo/ERA Mini Turbo, quite rare today, which had an oversize spigot bearing in the transfer gear housing. We do not keep these bearings.
I need to rebuild my automatic Mini gearbox - can you help?
Sorry, no, we do not keep any spares for the classic Mini automatic transmission.
Will this kit work with straight-cut Mini gears?
Yes, either straight-cut or helical standard gears are the same in this respect. The exception being dog-engagement gear sets for competition cars, which do not run baulk rings or synchromesh hubs. If you're interested in installing an MED dog 'box, please email us and we can put together a list of the bearings, gaskets and other components required to complete the build.
I've rebuilt the gearbox and am left with one spare needle roller bearing...
Depending on which gear set you have, yes there may be one spare layshaft needle roller bearing. We do this to cater for all gear sets, as the Special Tuning 'race' Mini gear sets run an extra bearing on the layshaft.
Can you rebuild my classic Mini gearbox for me?
Apologies, but we no longer offer a Mini gearbox rebuild service. However, if you search for 'How to rebuild a straight-cut Mini gearbox' on Youtube, we've put together a three-part series on how it's done. This guide applies to a standard gear set too, and should be very helpful for a DIY enthusiast. There's also step-by-step instructions featured in most versions of the Haynes workshop manual.
