HELICAL AUTO BIAS DIFFERENTIAL
Description
The helical-geared automatic torque biasing differential for the Mini makes an excellent performance upgrade over the standard or X-Pin unit, allowing a smooth and constant distribution of power to the wheels to maximise grip.
The differential is a direct replacement of the standard unit, therefore enabling the re-use of the standard crown wheel and pinion. Alternatively, why not upgrade to an MED Straight-Cut Final Drive and ARP Bolt Kit at the same time.
Whereas the X-Pin Differential is designed to add strength to the transmission, this differential also aids traction. It is less aggressive than the true Mini NXG LSD, but has proven to be highly effective in road, trackday and rally Minis. We've even supplied these to full race cars with excellent feedback on performance, especially in the wet and on tight twisty circuits.
What's more, the unit comes with a lifetime guarantee for peace of mind.
Make the most of your engine upgrades by transmitting the power more effectively through the front wheels.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use this differential in a road-going Mini?
Yes, it's ideal for a fast road Mini, and will noticeably increase traction over a standard or X-pin differential, without the usual downsides of a traditional clutch plate equipped limited-slip differential. It can also be effective in trackday Minis, rally cars and even full race cars.
What's meant by 'helical'?
This unit uses a set of angled, helical-cut gears to automatically bias torque to the wheel with the most grip, maximising traction without requiring clutches. The design gives a smooth operation and is maintenance free.
Can I use this in any Mini or Metro gearbox?
Yes, it suits all classic Mini transmissions and will bolt up to a standard crownwheel, or an MED straight-cut version if you need more strength and reduced side loading.
Will it work with Hardy Spicer couplings?
The differential is supplied with pot joint output shafts, so you will need to run the later pot joint output shaft covers and a set of Hardy Spicer adapters, part number MED-3900-HS, if you wish to do this. It's a popular combination.
Does this differential increase power?
No, but it will help acceleration considerably, especially noticeable in wet or slippery conditions where the front wheels can easily spin up with an open differential.
How does it compare to a clutch plate LSD?
It's easier on your arms, making it more useable for Minis used on the road, plus rally cars and trackday Minis. Ultimately the NXG LSD is more effective for competition use, and will maintain drive to both front wheels if a tyre lifts off the surface. The helical gear differential can loose drive in this particular situation, like an open diff, so care should be taken with suspension setup.
Do I need to shim the differential?
Yes we would recommend pre-loading by 0.001-0.002" if using roller bearings.
Are there any other parts required?
We'd recommend also purchasing a pair of new diff bearings, part number MED-3800-DB, and a set of ARP crownwheel bolts will offer additional peace of mind - part number MED-3502-QB.
