Description

Top quality central oil pick-up pipe. We use these in all gearboxes at MED, from road rebuilds to full-race dog-engagement setups.

The standard pick-up pipe feeds from the right side of the sump, which works well on a straight road, but enthusiastic cornering will soon lead to a drop in oil pressure as the oil surges to the opposite side.

Even a momentary drop in oil pressure can have catastrophic effects, so these are a must-have.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the benefit of installing a central oil pick-up pipe?

Arrow

The standard Mini/Metro oil feed pipe sits deep in the gearbox, over to the right by the sump plug. This has forever caused oil starvation issues when Minis are driven enthusiastically (as they should be!), as fast right-hand corners will slosh the oil in the opposite direction and away from the pipe. The central pick-up pipe relocates the feed to the centre of the sump to fix this.

How do I fit a Mini central oil pick-up pipe?

Arrow

Usually this would be installed as part of a gearbox rebuild, so firstly the engine and gearbox will need to be out of the car and dismantled. Remove the layshaft, laygear and standard oil feed pipe from the transmission housing. Now roll the laygear and central oil pick-up pipe back into position in one action. From here, tighten and refit all components as per a regular Mini gearbox rebuild. If you get stuck, get in touch and we can try to help.

Can I make do without this part?

Arrow

It depends how you are planning to drive the car. For all competition Minis, or road cars driven enthusiastically, we would consider this a must-have. Even a short moment of oil starvation to the engine can potentially destroy the crankshaft bearings and journals. For the comparatively low cost of the central pick-up pipe, it's well worthwhile.

Do these fit all Mini gearboxes?

Arrow

Yes, all manual transmission classic Minis and Metros, of all ages. These do not fit automatic transmission Minis.

Is there anything else to note?

Arrow

Make sure the mounting plate on the rear of the gearbox is perfectly flat before fitment. Sometimes you may find it easier to lightly tweak the mounting tab during installation, and readjust when back in position. Leave all fixings loose until the end, to aid reassembly. Avoid excessive use of silicone sealer, as this can make its way into the oil feed.
