Our high quality baulk ring set for our straight-cut synchro gear kits and all standard helical-cut gearsets.

Not to be confused with budget types on the market.

We can supply in sets of three or four, to suit three or four-synchro gearboxes.

Three synchro was fitted to early Minis, and MG Midget/Sprite. All others had four synchro gearboxes.

Where do the baulk rings fit in a classic Mini gearbox?

These sit between the synchro hubs and gears within the classic Mini/Metro transmission, acting almost like a brake to speed-match the two components during each gear change. This gives the smooth gearchange (comparative to an old fashioned 'crash' box with no synchromesh) that we have become accustomed to. Crunching between gears can indicate worn baulk rings.

When do I need to fit new baulk rings?

As mentioned above, if you are struggling to change gear without a crunching noise, it is usually caused by worn-out baulk rings. While the transmission is apart for a full rebuild, we we usually change the baulk rings at the same time. Longevity of the transmission can be increased significantly with mechanical sympathy and frequent oil changes.

Do I need three or four baulk rings?

If you have an early Mini without synchromesh on first gear, or an MG Midget/AH Sprite, choose the three-synchro option. Otherwise, the majority of classic Mini gearboxes will need four baulk rings.

What makes these different to others on the market?

While we cannot comment on every baulk ring design, we have found that these are the best available. These are comparable in quality to the genuine original Rover baulk rings used by the factory, and work well in daily drivers and performance Minis alike.

Will these suit all gear sets?

Yes, but as part of the gearbox rebuild, do check the baulk ring clearance to your specific gears, where they locate on thee cone/friction face. Aim for 0.060-0.0070".
