Description

Our pinion support housing adds much strength to the gearbox casing and is designed to fit directly to the MED Dog Engagement Gearset. CNC-machined from billet alloy, a captive needle roller bearing is fitted within the support section of the housing.

The kit comes complete with mounting screws and spacers and fits both remote and rod change gearbox casings. If you wish to install an MED Race Gearbox Steady Kit, please see the Gearbox Steady Adapters.

To fit the housing to a standard type main shaft we also offer an additional inner bearing race, which will require the standard main shaft nose to be ground down to 15mm diameter for fitment.

Please select the appropriate option above if you plan to use this with a standard main shaft, and we will supply the adapter.

The pinion support housing is aimed towards competition usage and omits the speedo drive, so for road use you will need to use a digital speedo.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I need an MED pinion support housing?

Arrow

When running a powerful A-Series engine, the transmission housing can become a weak spot, specifically around the central web. We have found this area of the gearbox housing can flex as power is transmitted from the pinion gear to the crownwheel, resulting in accelerated wear to the gear teeth. This is especially apparent on competition Minis with low final drive gearing, and a small pinion. The pinion support housing gives much-needed reinforcement to this end of the mainshaft, prolonging the life of the crownwheel and pinion and protecting the gearbox housing.

Do these work with all classic Mini gearboxes?

Arrow

All manual gearboxes, yes, although they are primarily aimed towards competition use with an MED dog engagement gear set within a rod change or four-synchro remote housing.

What modifications do I need to use this with a standard gear set?

Arrow

We supply the support bearing to work with the MED dog-engagement gear set, which is 17.99mm in diameter on the end of the mainshaft. If you would like to use a different gear set, the mainshaft diameter will likely be smaller than this, so we can supply a conversion bush to be press-fitted to the end of the mainshaft. You will need to have the mainshaft ground down to 15mm diameter to accept this bush, and then everything will fit together.

Why does the speedo no longer work with this fitted?

Arrow

The standard gearbox main shaft has a drive peg for the mechanical speedo - a stress raiser and potential weak spot that we remove on the MED dog-engagement gear set. The pinion support housing also replaces the standard Mini speedo drive assembly on the side of the gearbox, so if you plan to use this in a road car, we'd suggest using a GPS or trigger wheel type digital speedo.

How does the engine mount fit to the gearbox with a pinion support housing fitted?

Arrow

The kit comes with four alloy spacers to allow reinstallation of the original engine/gearbox mount to the pinion support housing, so fitment is very similar to using the standard speedo drive housing.
