Description

The MED SPi Mini flywheel is CNC machined from EN8 steel billet and weighs just 4.18kg, for a noticeable improvement to acceleration.

The standard Rover flywheel features a separate reluctor ring, which can move and affect the ignition timing. Here the teeth are machined directly into the flywheel, to very close tolerances, to maintain accurate ignition timing.

This kit comes fully assembled and dynamically balanced to within 1 gram on our in-house balancing rig, ready to run.

Stage 2 is ideally suited to a highly modified single-point injection Mini (1991-1996) producing up to 150lb.ft torque.

You'll instantly notice improvement to the car's acceleration off the line, while the precision balancing will result in smoother running engine. The clutch is perfectly usable for everyday traffic, but it will obviously give a firmer pedal than with the standard cover.

Stage 2 kit specification:

  • MED Ultra Light EN8 steel flywheel (4.18kg)

  • Organic clutch plate

  • Uprated competition clutch cover

  • MED steel clutch centre

  • Assembled and dynamically balanced to within 1g, ready to fit

  • Fitted with a pre-engaged ring gear

Frequently Asked Questions

Which cars does this fit?

Arrow

This flywheel kit suits classic Rover Minis with the single-point fuel injection system, as fitted from 1991 to 1996. It's ideal for Minis producing up to 150lb.ft of torque, so likely those running an aftermarket ECU but still using the original crank position sensor.

Is this flywheel kit ready to fit?

Arrow

Yes, we dynamically balance the assembly to within a gram, all fixings are torqued down and it's ready to fit. We supply some extra fitment and bedding-in tips inside the box when you purchase a flywheel kit. The reluctor ring is pre-machined into the flywheel to work alongside the standard crank position sensor.

What is the performance advantage of this flywheel?

Arrow

Upgrading to an MED steel flywheel not only saves weight, but also gives a more durable surface face on which to grip the clutch plate. The lighter the flywheel, the faster the engine will be able to increase/decrease RPM, making it more free-revving and responsive to throttle input. In addition, the CNC-machined reluctor ring teeth will not move, which can happen on the standard flywheel, affecting the overall performance.

Will this suit my Japanese-market Mini?

Arrow

Yes, if the Mini has a regular style round ignition coil and distributor. If your JDM Mini has a more modern wasted spark coil pack and no distributor, look instead at the MPi Mini flywheel kit, part number MED-4622-MPU.

Which starter motor do I need to use?

Arrow

This flywheel has 129 teeth on the ring gear and is designed for pre-engaged Mini starter motors only, as standard. Be careful with budget-grade replacement starter motors, as flex in the starter motor bendix can damage the ring gear teeth. We would recommend using the MED-5240-MP Micro starter motor if you're looking for an upgrade.

Can I purchase the flywheel only and install my own clutch cover and plate?

Arrow

Yes we do sell all of the components separately, but would highly recommend purchasing a complete kit, as it is setup, balanced and ready to fit. The included clutch cover is not a standard-spec replacement, but fully rebuilt to our own requirements to improve overall balance, torque holding and concentricity. A large proportion of an SPi Mini assembly's weight is in the clutch cover, which fits between the flywheel and crankshaft, so alignment and balance are crucial.

How long does it take to build and dispatch this kit?

Arrow

We try to keep a couple of each variety built up ready on the shelf, but if not, we can usually turn these around within one working day.
