Description

The MED Ultra Light Verto flywheel is CNC machined from a single billet of EN8 steel and weighs approximately 2.2kg less than the standard unit at just 3.55kg, taking the complete assembly to only 8.5kg.

This kit comes fully assembled and dynamically balanced to within 1 gram on our in-house balancing rig, ready to run.

Stage 2 is ideally suited to a highly-tuned road Mini with the later Verto-style clutch assembly, producing up to 150lb.ft torque.

You'll instantly notice improvement to the car's acceleration off the line, while the precision balancing will result in smoother running engine. The clutch is perfectly usable for everyday traffic, but it will obviously give a firmer pedal than with the standard cover.

Stage 2 kit specification:

  • MED Ultra Light EN8 steel flywheel (3.55kg)

  • Organic bonded clutch plate

  • Competition clutch cover

  • MED steel clutch centre

  • Assembled and dynamically balanced to within 1g, ready to fit

  • Integral pre-engaged ring gear

For less powerful applications, try the St1 Verto Ultra Light, which includes uses a more road-orientated clutch cover and plate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which classic Minis does this flywheel suit?

Arrow

This flywheel will suit all transverse A-Series engines (Mini/Metro) with a Verto-style clutch setup and pre-engaged starter motor, which was introduced in the early 1980s. This can also be retrofitted to an earlier car by changing the clutch mechanism and starter motor. Please note - this will not suit fuel-injected Rover Minis, but we make a version specifically for SPi and MPi Minis.

What is the advantage of this flywheel kit?

Arrow

Upgrading to an MED steel flywheel not only saves weight, but also gives a more durable surface face on which to grip the clutch plate. The lighter the flywheel, the faster the engine will be able to increase/decrease RPM, making it more free-revving and responsive to throttle input.

Will this flywheel increase the power of my Mini?

Arrow

No, changing the flywheel has no effect on the power output of the A-Series engine, however it does increase responsiveness and acceleration by reducing rotational inertia. Reducing weight from the flywheel in particular has a far greater impact on acceleration of the Mini than weight loss elsewhere, so is highly recommended for all performance Minis.

Is this for road or competition Minis?

Arrow

The MED Verto Ultra Light is our preferred option for performance road cars, although they have also been used extensively in competition. The flywheel itself weighs approximately 2kg less than the standard type, while the later Verto clutch arm design gives an easier clutch pedal than the early diaphragm type.

Which starter motor do I need to use?

Arrow

This flywheel has 129 teeth on the ring gear and is designed for pre-engaged Mini starter motors only, either standard-spec or aftermarket high-torque units. Standard pre-engaged starter motors can be identified by an in-built solenoid, and were fitted from the advent of the Verto-style flywheel in the early 1980s. Be careful with budget-grade replacement starter motors, as flex in the starter motor bendix can damage the ring gear teeth. We would recommend using either an MED-5200-HTP or MED-5240-MP starter motor if you're looking for an upgrade.

Can I purchase the flywheel only and install my own clutch cover and plate?

Arrow

Yes we do sell all of the components separately, but would highly recommend purchasing a complete kit, as it is setup, balanced and ready to fit. The included clutch cover is not a standard-spec replacement, but fully rebuilt to our own requirements to improve overall balance, torque holding and concentricity. A large proportion of a Verto assembly's weight is in the clutch cover, which fits between the flywheel and crankshaft, so alignment and balance are crucial.

How does this compare to a standard Mini flywheel?

Arrow

These are machined from certified EN8 steel billets compared to the cast iron originals. As a result, we can reduce the overall weight far more than is safely achievable on a standard flywheel, which are brittle in comparison. The ring gear teeth are also machined into the steel, then specially heat treated, for much improved longevity.
