Description

Unique to MED, our Hardy Spicer-style couplings are the strongest available and the number one choice for competition Minis, race or rally.

Our joints use CNC-machined billet EN24T steel outers for superior strength.

Supplied as a pair.

These slide onto Hardy Spicer-style driveshafts and we keep a range of output shaft adapters to run these competition couplings with an LSD or pot joint outputs.

Please see: LSD Hardy Spicer outputs or MED pot joint to Hardy Spicer adapters.

We would recommend installing these alongside MED 300M Driveshafts and a MED Hardy Spicer Coupling Kit.

They are also available as a complete Competition Driveshaft Kit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do these fit on a classic Mini?

Arrow

These couplings are the inner driveshaft joints, which slide on to driveshafts and connect to the output shafts from the gearbox. You will need to have original Hardy Spicer-fitment driveshafts, or use our new competition versions, part number MED-3902-HD.

What's meant by Hardy Spicer?

Arrow

Hardy Spicer was the original company behind the driveshaft couplings and CV joints on the Mini, an essential component for the front-wheel-drive layout, which was rather unusual for the late 1950s. The company later developed pot joints, which would go on to replace these crucifix-style universal joints in the 1970s. Hardy Spicer has not produced these joints for many years, and no longer exists in its original form, but the name has stuck.

Are Hardy Spicers better than pot joints?

Arrow

Pot joints were an improved design, but over the decades, competition Mini owners in particular have come to prefer the Hardy Spicer-style couplings. Our version is especially robust, rebuildable and also gives good exhaust manifold clearance. We also find it easier to remove a competition Mini engine in a hurry with these compared to pot joints.

Are these stronger than the original joints?

Arrow

Yes, MED joints feature CNC-machined billet EN24T steel outer sections for superior strength, where the originals can break under heavy load, especially on old joints or budget aftermarket replacements.

What are the threaded sections for?

Arrow

These sections, known as a slip joint, are adapted from another heavy duty driveshaft application, so when we use them for the Mini, this external threaded section is not used.

Do the joints come with a rubber gaiter?

Arrow

No, as they are more substantial than standard, we do not have a suitable rubber boot/gaiter for the joints. We have not found this to be an issue in any competition Mini. If used regularly on the road or for autograss or rallying, keep the joints clean and with a spray of white lithium grease or similar.

Are the joints rebuildable?

Arrow

Yes. Please contact us for advice and spares.
