What size thread does this have?

The classic Mini gearbox uses a 5/8" UNC thread. So long as your sump plug thread is in good condition, this is a direct replacement.

What's the benefit of a Gold sump plug?

This plug uses a much more powerful Neodymium magnet on the end than a standard plug, which attracts ferromagnetic particles that may be circulating in the shared engine/transmission oil. By this we mean small fragments of steel gears, or particles of iron from regular engine wear. By attracting these particles, the sump plug not only reduces debris in the oil, but it gives an indication of engine wear or damage during an oil change.

Can I re-use the plug each oil change?

Yes, but you may wish to fit a new washer, as usual.

What size socket do I need?

15/16" AF, or usually a large ring spanner. Nip up by feel with a spanner and check for leaks.

Why is the head drilled?

Some race regulations require lock wire to be passed through and around fixings of the engine to seal them up for scrutineering, so this makes it easy.
