Description

The MED aluminium stub stacks have been extensively tested on our flow bench to optimise the elliptical radius on the stub stack. This results in improved air flow to the carb and a proven increase in performance on a wide range of different engines and rolling roads.

Combined with the genuine ITG air filter, this offers an unbeatable package for the single 1.5-inch SU carburettor - HS4, H4 or HIF38. The filter base plate is laser cut from lightweight aluminium, while the specially-designed ITG filter with full radius sides gives an easy fit within the standard bulkhead.

Whereas many aftermarket air filters have a solid plate opposite the carb mouth, the ITG design offers maximum airflow through an open-style foam filter.

Kit contents:

    • Laser-cut aluminium base plate to suit 1.5-inch SU.

    • CNC-machined aluminium stub stack for HS4/H4/HIF38.

    • MED-branded ITG foam filter.

    • All fixings required (Both UNC and UNF screws/nuts to suit different carbs).

Reticulated polyester foam filters achieve maximum air flow, cleaning efficiency and dust load-up tolerance. They allow air to pass through without causing a large drop in pressure, arresting a high proportion of airborne dust while feeding the engine clean air.

Dust load-up tolerance is the capability to absorb a large amount of dust without reducing air flow capacity.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does this fit to the carburettor?

Arrow

Firstly remove the standard airbox and elbow from the car. The aluminium baseplate mounts directly to the inlet of the carburettor, sandwiched in place using the stub stack. Ensure the baseplate and stub stack are perfectly aligned with the inlet and nip up the fixings. Now clip the air filter in place - you may find it easier to test fit the filter to the baseplate before it's on the car.

Why are there two types of fixings supplied?

Arrow

Some carburettor bodies have UNC threads, whereas others have plain holes, or have been drilled through the threads. If you are using the UNC fixings, rather than UNF nut and bolt, we would highly recommend a drop of Loctite on the threads, and nip them up by hand.

How will this affect my engine tuning?

Arrow

We've found that this stub stack system will flow considerably more air than the standard air box and even many alternative aftermarket air filters. This extra flow can lean off the fuel:air mixture, so we would highly recommend having the engine set up post-fitment to get the most from this upgrade. Every A-Series engine we've tried this system on has gained power once tuned to suit, so it is very effective, and one of the most affordable bolt-on upgrades.

What are the external dimensions of this air filter?

Arrow

This measures 192mm wide, 148mm tall and 65mm deep, although it is ITG's 'sausage' design, which tapers out to this maximum depth in the centre. It will give good clearance to the Mini's bulkhead or Sprite inner wing.

The air filter is touching my Mini's bulkhead - is there anything I can do?

Arrow

It's likely that you may have a large spacer block installed somewhere between the carb and the manifold, or the top engine steady is too short. Either swap the block for a slimmer spacer, or install an adjustable top engine steady to tilt the engine further forwards, such as part number MED-5540-ES-WB.
