Description

The MED Race gearbox steady kit fits to the lower mounting holes of the flywheel and the speedo housings on the rod change gearbox.

These are considered a must for any high performance trackday and race Minis to restrict fore and aft movement of the engine, which can otherwise lead to broken exhaust manifolds and gearchange issues.

The adjustable length bars feature high quality motorsport grade 3/8" UNF rod ends.

Tech specs:

  • High quality 3/8" UNF Teflon-lines rod ends

  • Supplied with all fixings and stainless steel spacers

  • Adjustable on car, with left and right hand threads

  • Powder coated heavy duty brackets

Please note, you will need to mark and drill two holes on the subframe to accept the rear fixings, although some subframes already have one hole drilled in a suitable position.

You may also wish to install one of our MED Race engine steadies to complete the kit.

If you have an MED Pinion Support Housing installed, please see the Gearbox Steady Adapter kit.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the benefit of these Mini gearbox steadies?

Arrow

It is the most affective modification to limit fore and after engine movement, which if left unchecked can quite easily break exhaust manifolds at the Y-piece. When BMC changed from a remote gearbox housing to the rod change from around 1973, the engine and gearbox assembly lost a significant amount of bracing under the floor of the car. These remedy the situation and we'd consider them a must-have for any high performance Mini.

Will they fit on all classic Minis?

Arrow

Yes, all manual transmission cars. These can even be used on a remote change gearbox to further support the engine and gearbox.

Are they adjustable in situ?

Arrow

Yes, each steady bar features a left and right-hand thread, so you can turn the centre turnbuckle and adjust the length to suit your particular car's engine position. There is plenty enough movement to suit all applications.

Will the rod-ends wear out?

Arrow

In time, yes, but we insist on using the highest quality Teflon-lined joints to give excellent longevity. We do keep spares, but in the many years of producing these kits, have never been asked for a replacement joint - so they do seem to last very well indeed.

Can I use them on a road-going Mini?

Arrow

Yes, and many of our customers do use these on the road in highly-tuned Minis, but they will transmit more noise and vibration from the engine through to the car. It depends on the use of the Mini and also personal preference; they are better suited to high performance trackday and competition cars than high mileage daily drivers.

How do they fit?

Arrow

The two supplied brackets mount to the rear of the transmission casing using the standard bolts. From here the adjustable bars reach back to the rear of the Mini subframe and are bolted through the steel at this point. On some front subframes, there may already be two holes drilled to accept the bars, whereas on others you will need to mark and drill the subframe in a suitable location. We would suggest mounting through the double-skinned section for the strongest location.

Do I need any other engine/gearbox steadies?

Arrow

On a competition Mini, we would run a pair of these gearbox steadies and a matching solid-mounted top engine steady, part number MED-5555-ES, to give the best possible support. If it is more road-orientated trackday car, perhaps consider our rubber-bushed alternative - part number MED-5540-ES. With these three steady bars installed, we do not usually find any need for the small front gearbox steady fitted to later cars, or the bulky thermostat-to-bulkhead steadies.
